Why We Require Drivers to Be 21+
A simple, transparent explanation of our minimum age policy and how it keeps every trip safer.
Published: Feb 7, 2026
We often hear the same question: “Why can’t I rent a car if I’m under 21?” It’s a fair question. Many young drivers are responsible and experienced. But there are real, practical reasons the rental industry sets a minimum age.
Risk and Experience
Younger drivers have less time behind the wheel and fewer real‑world driving situations to learn from. That doesn’t mean every young driver is unsafe — but on average, risk is higher. For a rental company, that risk affects every customer and every vehicle in the fleet.
Insurance Cost and Coverage
Insurance providers typically set higher premiums or restrictions for drivers under 21. If we allowed under‑21 rentals, costs would rise for everyone. We’d rather keep pricing fair and consistent for all drivers who meet the minimum requirements.
Why 21 Is the Standard
The 21+ policy is not arbitrary. It’s based on industry norms, insurance requirements, and practical experience. It’s a balance between access and safety, and it helps protect both the driver and the vehicle.
Choosing the Right Vehicle
- City trips: A smaller, efficient car is easier to park and saves on fuel.
- Comfort: Features like A/C, Bluetooth, and comfortable seating matter on longer drives.
- Fuel type: Gas, diesel, or hybrid — choose what fits your trip length and budget.
- Safety: Prioritize vehicles with modern safety systems and good visibility.
If You’re Not 21 Yet
Use this time to build experience and confidence on the road. Learn local rules, drive in different conditions, and practice safe habits. When you turn 21, you’ll be ready to book the right car with confidence.
